“I’d like to talk to about your relationship with Lornyc. Not him exactly, but the fact you are mated. Am I right that you’re a monogamous pair?”

Methian sighed and looked up from his book. Dr Jimma had found him in the reading room. He’d hoped after taking tea with Heba that they might leave him in peace for a few hours. He sensed the easiest way to get rid of her would be to answer her questions. “Yes, we’re married. Forsaking all others.”

“You’re not having sex with anyone else at all?” Her curiosity was almost funny.

“Not anymore.”

“Oh, so you have in the past?”

“Yes, before we entered into a relationship I had plenty of other lovers.”

“How many?” she pressed.

Methian huffed. “I don’t know, I didn’t count them. I had sex whenever and with whomever took my fancy at the time. I didn’t make a pivot table and a statistical analysis.”

She smiled. “Oh, but that’s much more normal. That’s the Valen way, lots of copulating with lots of people. No doubt you’ll want to revert to that at some point.”

“I love Lornyc. I don’t want anyone else. I understand that’s a difficult concept for you, but Lornyc makes me happy all the time. With the others, it was fun and I enjoyed it, but it didn’t give me the long-term satisfaction I get with Lornyc.”

“I must say I am relieved to hear you do seem to present some Valen ways. Biology will out.” She tapped something into her wrist strap. “I think I’ve the idea now.”

“When can I see him?”

“Who?”

“Lornyc. I want to go home.”

She tutted. “On about that again.”

“Please. I heard that Diam and Cupris have petitioned the Brethren Council about me. Please let them know where I am, so they tell can tell Lornyc, he’ll be worried, upset, and I don’t want him to suffer.”

“Heba told me. We are waiting to hear what the Brethren Council will say, our superiors will be assessing the situation.” She patted his leg. “You’ll be fine soon. I’m sure of it.”

Methian sagged. He got the feeling she really didn’t understand what Lornyc meant to him, it seemed such an alien concept to her. If time was the same here as at home then he’d been away four days now, and he knew Lornyc would be getting frantic.

Dr Jimma turned to leave. “One last question, Methian. Have you ever experienced an overwhelming urge to copulate?”

Methian snorted. “If you’d been listening, you’d know that’s what I get whenever I see my husband. He’s become adept at keeping me in line and making me appreciate what I’ve got.”

“That’s not what I meant. Has there been a single occasion where you had a carnal, unrelenting need to have sex, above anything else, as if you wouldn’t be able to stop or control yourself?”

“I know I was a bit of a player when I was younger, but I have always been able to control myself. I take it you Valen are almost beast-like, then?” He didn’t know where she was going with this line of questioning, but he hoped the barb stung.
